After sailing from Soerebaja, TF308 headed toward the port of Kuching, where the Japanese were reinforcing for their push further into Borneo. The Seaplane carrier Chiyoda and a destroyer attempted an interception of this small task force but the Chiyado was sunk. The task force was then free to assualt the large supply columns.
It is notable as the first major victory for the allied forces.
HMNLS Banckert was badly damaged and had to leave the task force for Singapore.
