Pearl Harbor is the primary US Naval Base of the territory of Hawaii in the United States. On December 7, 1941, planes launched by carriers of The Empire of Japan launched a surprise attack on the US Fleet docked at the harbor.
32 Zeros, 144 Kates, and 126 Vals bombed the defenseless docked ships, sinking the following:

A second attack the same day hit the airfield, damaging the runway and hangers and destroying a number of American planes on the ground.
Only six Japanese planes were destroyed by antiaircraft fire.
This attack caused the entry of the United States into World War II, and was only the beginning of a long and drawn out war between the US and Japan in the Pacific.
